"Hi, I'm Julia...Julia Gulia..."

THE WEDDING SINGER (PG-13)

Reviewed February 15, 1998 - Check out The Wedding Singer web site.

You know that time has really flown by when all those many things that people once considered "cool" become mere fodder for cheesy comedies.  Remember Michael Jackson's Thriller?  Frankie Goes to Hollywood?  Dallas and Dynasty?  Don't look now, but you're back in 1985, new wave all the way and as slick as ever.

In The Wedding Singer, SNL alum Adam Sandler takes on the role of romantic lead as Robbie Hart, a would-be rocker turned wedding crooner back in the "me decade."  Singing cover versions of all the latest and greatest tunes, Robbie is one of the best wedding singers around. Well, he was one of the best, but when he gets stood up at the altar at his own wedding, Robbie's life takes a nosedive.  All of a sudden, wedding receptions featuring "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" are replaced by ones featuring "Love Stinks" as Robbie rides the downward spiral into crazed depression.

But fear not!  This is, after all, a comedy, and this is, after all, an Adam Sandler movie.  Those familiar with Sandler's whisper-to-a-scream deliveries, and those who've heard some of his lyrically-challenged songs know some of what they're in for with The Wedding Singer...believe me, you'll get a lot of Sandler.  What you will also get, however, (and this may be more of a surprise) is sweetness.  That's right, sweetness.

Co-starring Drew Barrymore as the charmingly innocent Julia Sullivan (Robbie's eventual love interest), The Wedding Singer not only delivers 80's nostalgia and silly humor, but also delivers a genuinely sweet storyline.  I know, I know, I can barely believe it myself, but along with all the laughs in The Wedding Singer, you'll also get a fair share of sugary sentiment and boy-scout goodness.  The result?  A refreshing and entertaining romantic comedy that is more likeable than most would probably expect.  Topped with some hilarious bit performances by Steve Buscemi and Jon Lovitz, and featuring more 80's new wave hits than you can shake a stick at, The Wedding Singer is, very simply, a lot of fun.  Sure, Adam Sandler could definitely benefit from some additional acting experience (and maybe a few lessons), but judging from the number of times that I (along with the rest of the audience) laughed during this film, I really have little to complain about...

tomperrin88@juno.com gives this movie  stars: "hi Tom here okay i gave it 5 stars because Adam Sandler rocks and so do his movies and music. Any body that put 1-3 should sing "Put a bullet in my head" because they need to die" (4/1/00)

jookster@aol.com gives this movie  stars: "This movie was so good! I really don't see why anyone would criticize it! It was so funny when George was at the wedding and he starts crying! Also when he was like, "Do you really want to hurt me...do you really want to make me cry!" :) And how about the time when the limo driver guy was like "They were CONES!" And you definitely can't diss out the granny...she rocked the boat! Her and her meatballs...lol. OK well thats good. Death to all u people who hate it. peace" (11/10/99)

Kyski10@aol.com gives this movie  stars: "I rented this movie last week with David Berger and it was so cool! There was even a guy that had a speech impetement in it like me! Than Singer came over also and we all had a threesome while watching the movie! Sandler was hillarious! The one drawback is that Adam Sandler made fun of speech impetements" (11/9/98) (Kinky, but this is just slightly more information than we really need, don't you think? -- fuzzydog)

vetrs.@indosat.net.id gives this movie  stars: "drew, you so cute and fat in that movie" (10/25/98)

zerocoolice@hotmail.com gives this movie  stars: "the movie was very romantic.titanic was an overbudgeted attempt by an action director to make a disaster/love story and was badly messed up but got away due to high publicity and being considered the fad.the wedding singer however is a very good effort and delivers just as intended,an 80's nostalgia and a glimse of true unselfish and innocent love.the best part is when drew cries in front of the mirror but suddenly becomes so happy when she imagines herself with the guy she truly loves." (10/23/98)

David gives this movie  stars: "Had the potential but it was not funny at all." (10/4/98)

ladesign@mediaone.net gives this movie  stars: "Yes, that's right....five stars! I enjoyed being catapulted back to the 80's when things seemed a little more innocent than today. I got a kick out of seeing the goofy clothes and big hair being sported througout this great romantic comedy. Adam and Drew had a cute chemistry that shouldn't be missed......and neither should all the great music!" (9/30/98)

kayandshellie@yahoo.com gives this movie  stars: "First off, it's got Adam Sandler (my favorite comedian). 2nd, it's got Steve Buschemi(my favorite actor). 3rd, it's got the greatest ending that has ever graced any movie, I mean it has Billy Idol, what can get any cooler. It is just an all around fantastic movie. Drew Barrymore is great in it as well. Not much else to say except for I love it." (9/28/98)

skdooer@hotmail.com gives this movie  stars: "This movie was great! I love Adam Sandler. How could anyone not love him? People are right; this is no Titanic, but it's a must see!" (9/3/98)

davgro14@aol.com gives this movie  stars: "this is my absolute favorite movi of all time! without a doubt, it is perfect. listen to the people compare it with titanic, titanic was about the equivelant of a basement-produced roger corman flick- the wedding singer is in a whole other ballpark in fact it's a whole different sport, seconded only by the almighty pulp fiction. the wedding singer is the best and if you don't think so or haven't seen it, get the movie and watch it OVER AND OVER AND OVER UNTIL YOU DO LIKE IT!!!!!!!!!!" (9/1/98)

Rodney gives this movie  stars: "I cant get enough of Drew Barrymore. She is so awesome and innocent, i keep watching the movie over and over again just to see her expressions and the way she acts. I am now in love with her. The movie was great too. Luckily i like Adam Sandler too or else I would have missed an awesome performance by Drew Barrymoore. If you dont like Adam Sandler at least see it for her. I loved the song at the end of the movie." (8/25/98)

mcinc@sprint.ca gives this movie  stars: "This movie is so good , the way that drew and adam played was so great . The songs and stuff about 1985 was so well broten back it was like we where in 1985 ! The way that Roby used to seduced Julia was so great especially with the song he sangs to her at the end is heartfilling . Bravo to Adam for is great singing (I did'nt know he could sing so good)" (8/12/98)

blakeya@fastlink.com.au gives this movie  stars: "The wedding singer is the coolest movie in the world it even beats TITANIC which was at the top of the charts for 27 weeks but the wedding singer is still the best mivie in the world From David Battley" (7/22/98)

Danielle and Alison gives this movie  stars: "A fantastic movie. Way better than the titanic. We loved it." (6/9/98)

Uncle Bob gives this movie  stars: "Didn't anyone regognize the insane guy who played an insane guy in Con Air aswell? He sung that 'He's got the whole world in his hands,' in Con Air, and he sung in this movie too! We think he's the hero of The Wedding Singer, (along with George the transvestite) not Adam Sandler, or dogfaced Drew Barrymore." (6/6/98)

jlawson2extra.com.nz says: "If you were an adult in the "80's, you will enjoy this film. The visual references to this most fashionchallenged decade is amusing. The colour themes, the styles, the michael Jackson wear-a-likes, excellent!! I especially loved the brown velour "track suit" worn by the brother in law in the garden - where did the costume department find these items in such pristine condition - there were almost as many laughs (albe them embarassed) at the wonderful costuming." (5/29/98)

mercuryzeo@aol.com gives this movie  stars: "Why the hell isn't George getting any credit? I think he's the best charactar in the whole fuc*** movie!!! He's what makes it so funny... that and the fat lady in the beginning." (5/19/98)

corrigank@cnc.bc.ca gives this movie  stars: "What i'm wondering is whether or not the microphones that were hanging above the actors' head (in almost every scene), were intentionally not edited out." (5/19/98)

Fiona Campbell gives this movie  stars: "I love The Wedding Singer are good and funny but I couldn't stop laugh and I love Adam and Drew and they is best couple and I love Adam kiss Drew in plane and I love his sing the song with Drew in the plane. I love it again The Wedding Singer is best movies." (5/13/98)

kurry.rob@start.com.au gives this movie  stars: "I really didn't expect this movie to be as good as it was as it was not my type of film, but Adam and Drew were fantastic and seeing the eighties again really cracked me up! I didn't stop laughing the whole time during the movie. Loved it!" (5/4/98)

mburn@ozemail.com.au gives this movie  stars: "The film contained some funny one-liners and a light-hearted atmosphere that could warm any heart, yet the storyline lacked big-time. A wedding singer gets stood up at his own wedding but then falls for a waitress called Julia. Romantic comedies need to be original if they are to stand up to such classics as "Sleepless in Seattle" or "One Fine Day." It was on a predictable path the whole way, with nothing special happening along the way. Drew Barrymore needed better material and Adam Sandler......what's the big deal with that guy? I would definitely not call him a "funny comedian". Nevertheless, the transvestite singer and his renditions of "Give me time" were stunning." (4/26/98)

cblur21@aol.com gives this movie  star: "Why does Adam Sandler continue making movies? I can hope that he'll eventually follow the much funnier Chris Farley's lead and OD on something. This movie is filled with more cliches than an average live action Disney kids movie. And whoever said that Sandler was a singer? The songs are easily the most grating part of this complete waste of a movie. If I could give it lower than 1 star, I would." (4/10/98)

timschreier@usa.net gives this movie  stars: "One of the best movies of the year. If you don't go see it, your dumb. Go see it. You won't be disapointed." (4/5/98)

leeves@cpis.net gives this movie  stars: "It was great, She wreally cracks me up." (3/30/98)

lazer14@excitemail.com gives this movie  stars: "Drew And Adam Rocked." (3/28/98)

dreeves@cpis.net gives this movie  stars: "If you overlooked this movie or you decided you didn't really care for Adam Sandler's humor, then you are missing out! This is a very light-hearted, romantic, feel good film--the perfect date movie for 20 and 30somethings. Adam Sandler does a very convincing performance as a man who feels his life is going nowhere and Drew Barrymore is the perfect romantic, albeit naiive, darling. And one can not say enough about all the jokes in reference to the 80s. For those of us that grew up in that era (I was 14 in 1985), it has a lot of hilarity. This is no Titanic, but it is certainly a film not to be missed." (3/1/98)
