A quintessential teen romantic comedy, She's All That rehashes the ugly-duckling-turns-swan story once again.  In this version, Zack Siler (Freddie Prinze, Jr.), the most popular guy in school, bets his friends that he can transform any girl in school into a prom queen.  The test subject: Laney Boggs (Rachael Leigh Cook), a quiet, unpopular girl whose interests lie in art, politics and the environment.  He's charming, she's dorky...let the games begin.

The journey that She's All That takes is one that's more than predictable.  As Zack pursues Laney, she very quickly blossoms into a beautiful (and increasingly popular) girl.  Zack, of course, slowly realizes that he genuinely likes Laney, and true feelings develop between the two youngsters.  It's a storybook romance, and one that is eventually complicated by the deception (the bet) which originally led to Zack and Laney's original meeting.  As the prom nears, the suspense builds...who's going with whom, who'll be crowned King and Queen, what will happen to Zack and Laney?

There are a number of subplots in this film that I won't go into here, but you can more or less tell where this story leads.  For those who are looking for this kind of mindless escapism, She's All That is a relatively tolerable film, helped by decent performances by Prinze and Cook (and a great supporting performance by Kieran Culkin as Laney's younger brother).  For those looking for more, however, She's All That will likely disappoint.  This film is predictable from beginning to end, and it contains production values that aren't any better than what you might see on TV.  Seen it, done that...in short, She's All That isn't all that it could be...it's not quite an ugly duckling, but it isn't a beautiful swan either...
