AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME (PG-13)
Reviewed June 14, 1999 - Check out the Austin Powers Website.
Picking right up from where International Man of Mystery left off, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me explodes onto screens with another installment of Mike Myers' wacky, time-warped spy saga. In this new adventure, Dr. Evil (Mike Myers) continues his quest for world domination assisted by his associates Number Two (Robert Wagner/Rob Lowe) and Frau Farbissina (Mindy Sterling). Their plan is a simple one: travel back in time to 1969, and steal Austin Powers' (Mike Myers) "mojo"...the source of all his power and appeal. Assisted by a corrupt and grossly overweight operative called Fat Bastard (Mike Myers), Dr. Evil thus forces Austin Powers and CIA Operative Felicity Shagwell (Heather Graham) to also travel back in time, where they attempt to recapture Powers' mojo and prevent Dr. Evil from destroying Washington DC (and the world) with the lasergun he has planted on the moon (Dr. Evil's "Death Star").
Frantic? Yes. Silly? Yes. Disorganized? Yes. From start to finish, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me runs like a series of sight gags, visual and verbal puns, and short comedy bits, many of which do not have anything to do with the central plot. Forget about restraint and subtlety, this film is all about color, energy, attitude, excess and self-indulgence, and I think that's just the way Myers wants it. The result is a film that definitely has its share of very funny moments, but also one that on several occasion goes too much over the top (or over the edge). If you're not one who can laugh at some very base, sometimes offensive humor, then The Spy Who Shagged Me is not for you. Personally, I continue to find characters such as Dr. Evil and his alienated son Scott (who isn't evil enough for his dad) endlessly amusing, and the introduction of "Mini-Me" (Verne Troyer), Dr. Evil's new 1/8 scale human clone-pet, definitely added to the fun in my opinion. Okay I'll admit it, I laughed a lot as I was watching this film. Still, my enthusiasm for several of this film's most creative and entertaining bits/parodies was dulled by a handful of unnecessarily tasteless scenes and characters (Fat Bastard being one of them). "That isn't funny, that's just sick" was a thought that ran through my mind during several points in this film, which leads me to the somewhat lukewarm rating. There is indeed fun to be had in this second installment of the Austin Powers series, but this is also a film that could have used slightly less sophomoric humor, and slightly more ruthless editing.

gillianlover@hotmail.com gives this movie stars: "Funnier than the original. Plot even worse than the original -- but it's Austin Powers, and with all the jokes, does anyone really care about a plot? The film also succeeded in that it wasn't trying to be something "clever" -- it just wanted to be as stupid as possible and didn't care whether it was ridiculous or not -- 90% of the jokes worked -- and that's more than I can say for other spoofs, where little to none of the jokes are "laugh-out-loud" funny. It also succeeded with true performances from Myers, Hurley and Graham. Dr Evil was a lot better than Austin in this one, though." (6/22/99)
David gives this movie stars: "Very very amusing and funny but needed at least a little plot like the first. Mini Me rocked !" (6/22/99)
