AUSTIN POWERS: INTERNATIONAL
MAN OF MYSTERY (PG-13)
Austin "Danger" Powers (Mike Myers) is a '60s British superspy-agent who's arch enemy, Dr. Evil (Mike Myers), narrowly escapes capture by freezing himself in a cryogenic pod and launching himself into orbit aboard a Bob's Big Boy rocket in 1967. Determined to be there when Dr. Evil returns, Powers has himself cryogenically frozen as well, and when in 1997 Dr. Evil returns, so does Powers.
With take-offs on everything from '60s culture, to James Bond, to Laugh-in and more, Austin Powers turns in as a truly funny spoof from Myers and director Jay Roach. Clumsily discovering that times have changed in the last thirty years, Powers all of a sudden finds his formerly charming, seductive, sex-starved '60s persona doesn't play as well in the '90s. Dr. Evil faces an equally difficult transition, finding that his organization, once bent on world domination, has gone legit in his absence, and now specializes in the field of telecommunications and cable.
There are many genuine laughs in Austin Powers, and with supporting characters named "Number 2", "Basil Exposition", and "Alotta Fagina", you know that the point is definitely silliness. Fortunately, Myers has the uncanny ability of being annoying yet loveable, giving the film a consistently light, tongue-in-cheek quality that never quite touches reality. Of course, too much of anything can be bad, and Austin Powers definitely over-does! Some of the skits go slightly too long, and some of the jokes are slightly too obvious. This is Mike Myers, after all, and those who've seen some of his earlier films will know exactly what to expect.
The supporting cast in Austin Powers include Mimi Rogers (Mrs. Kensington), Robert Wagner (Number 2), Michael York (Basil Exposition), Elizabeth Hurley (Mrs. Kensington's daughter Vanessa), and a group of...um...Fem-bots, among others. All are obviously in on the joke, and perform well in their roles. Still, Powers isn't necessarily one of those "must-see" type of films. It's definitely silly, and most definitely over-the-top, but also slightly over-done. Nevertheless, if you feel like going back in time for a while, watching a few groovy moves, and having some laughs along the way, check out Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Yeah, b-a-a-a-b-y...

gives this movie stars: "Austin
Powers is much better than any other B-grade" comedy, any of Leslie
Nielsen's works, or any of Adam Sandler's putrid and over-rated films.
The jokes were on a toilet-level, but they were delivered with such confidence
and suavity from Mike Myers and (surprise, surprise!) Liz Hurley that you
just had to laugh. Alotta Fagina?.......goodness." (7/3/98)

Shag-a-delic. Dr. Evil's lines and schemes were a great slap at the bad-guys

movie was very enjoyable. It was a laugh-out-loud comedy, with great one
